Ennis

At Dromoland Castle

Close to Dromoland Castle, the small town Ennis, sprang up in medieval times, its streets a narrow, irregular tangle on the banks of the River Fergus. Ennis Friary, founded in the 13th century by the same powerful O’Brien family that created Dromoland Castle, is still intact and worth a visit. Renowned across Europe as a centre of learning you’ll find interesting artefacts here, including 15th- and 16th-century sculptures. Though light on sights the town is very pedestrian-friendly and enjoyable to wander around and browse in.
