From Pristine Greens to the Green Agenda
Charlotte & Co
We were delighted to welcome 4th Class from Clarecastle National School in Co. Clare who had the wonderful opportunity to participate in a Sustainability Workshop at Dromoland Castle, courtesy of the Green Schools Committee. Fiona O’Shea Stack, our Health, Safety & Sustainability Officer, warmly welcomed the group and expertly guided them on a captivating walk through the estate, sharing intriguing facts about the diverse wildlife, plants, and trees.
Exploring by the lake
Continuing their exploration, the school group strolled along the serene lake, where they discovered our recycling area. Under Fiona’s guidance, the students delved into our commitment to sustainability and the responsible waste management processes in place.
Meeting with Dorothy, our Head Gardener
Next on the agenda was a meeting with our Head Gardener, Dorothea Madden, who shared information about the different trees in Dromoland. Highlights included the remarkable 200-year-old Monterey Cypress tree and oak trees with a life cycle spanning an impressive 300 years, from growth to life and eventual demise. Dorothea also regaled the group with tales of the nine cygnets born in Dromoland last year.
Walled Garden Tour
Fiona and Dorothy then treated the group to a tour of the Walled Garden, offering a preview of the plants that will bloom come spring. The students were fascinated by the pear and apple trees and observed the greenhouse, where grapes and tomatoes are sown and preparations are underway to grow winter lettuce. Dorothy showcased the historical bee boles, while Fiona enlightened them about the contemporary honey-making process on the estate. As they concluded the tour, Dorothy generously gifted each student with crocus and grape hyacinth bulbs for sowing at home.
A cosy Conclusion at Fig Tree Restaurant
After an incredibly enlightening tour on a frosty Friday, the 1st of December, the school group gathered with our delightful hot chocolate and indulged in the scrumptious goodness of tasty pastries at the Fig Tree Restaurant.
Our heartfelt thanks to Clarecastle National School for their willing participation in discovering our sustainable journey here at Dromoland Castle.
