The history and heritage of Dromoland Castle

The history and heritage of Dromoland Castle is a huge part of Dromoland’s story and one that we strive to ensure is protected and nurtured in the story of modern day Dromoland.

We are exceptionally grateful to the Weir and O’ Brien family for their recent kind gesture to gift the sentimental, family heirloom portrait, of Donough O Brien – 16th Baron of Inchiquin to Dromoland Castle, which now stands proudly on display in our Reception.

Donough O Brien was the head of the longest recorded royal family to live in Dromoland Castle (Descent from “Emperor” of the Irish Brian Ború (1014) and last week we welcomed Hugh Weir, husband of the late Grania Weir (nee O’ Brien) daughter of Donough, who so very kindly gifted this historic portrait to the Estate. Grania was the last remaining member of the O Brien family to live at Dromoland Castle.

Commenting on the presentation of the portrait, Managing Director, Dromoland Castle, Mark Nolan stated;

“Grania was a great friend of Dromoland down through the years, and was an inspiring and kind lady and we thank Hugh, her husband, who visited recently with both his son Thomas and grandson Eoin to unveil the portrait. It will remain a treasured piece of Dromoland’s heritage and a reminder of the remarkable story of the O’ Briens of Dromoland.”
